“Haikara Hori” is the unique catchphrase of Karahori shopping street. Stretching about 800 meters, it runs east to west. It connects Matsuyamachisuji to Tanimachisuji and Kamimachisuji. Karahori is more than just a shopping street. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine.

Karahori dates back to the late 1500s. The powerful samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi shaped its history. Osaka Castle’s moat once extended to where Karahori shotengai stands today. “Karahori” literally means “dry moat.”

Imagine this area bustling from the Meiji era to before World War II. Even after the war, Karahori quickly recovered. It suffered little damage from air raids. The street gained popularity by holding the city’s first large lottery sale.

Today, Karahori retains its charm. Early Showa era row houses and alleys line the gentle slopes. Walking through them is a delight. Local architects have renovated many row houses. These now house unique shops and cafes. Young people increasingly visit Karahori.

Karahori shotengai is like many others in Osaka. Yet, prices here are cheaper than in Tenjinbashisuji shotengai. The shotengai itself is only about 600 meters long. Venturing outside reveals quaint and narrow winding streets. Charming old buildings await discovery.

Unlike many areas in Osaka, Karahori retains many old houses. It suffered only minor damage in the 1940s. These historical houses now host coffee shops and clothing boutiques. Art galleries and other businesses thrive here.

Allow yourselves to get lost in Karahori. Don’t hesitate to explore narrow streets. You might discover a historical home or a charming shop. Some old buildings have become micro shopping malls.

One such mall is named Len. This beautiful historical home dates back to the Meiji period. Len houses a chocolate shop and a crêpe café. You can find a bicycle rental company and a rentable gallery here. There is also a leather bag store, a kimono school, and a design shop. A Japanese health food restaurant completes the experience. Try the hot chocolate with kinako.

Another micro mall is called So. This charming house has a roof covered in grass. Inside So, you’ll find a café and a kimono store. There is also a kimono bar and an okome (rice) café. A gallery, a hair salon, and a tapas and pinchos bar await you. A Japanese restaurant adds to the variety.

Take a moment to appreciate Konbu Doi. It is a konbu or kelp specialty shop. Kelp is the base for the umami flavor in Japanese cuisine. They stock ready-made soup broth for a kitchen shortcut. Surprisingly, they also offer kelp tea and kelp-flavored candy.

Consider visiting Kyu Yamutei for lunch. The aroma of spices fills this retro-style restaurant. Curry flavors change daily and are always exciting to try.

Karahori shopping street offers a perfect mix of nostalgia and modern trends. Karahori is a neighborhood where you can experience the old and new together. It’s a gem of Osaka waiting to be explored.
