In 1895, a new path was carved through Kyoto, leading to the Fushimi Inari Shrine. This path, marked by the Inari Sankei Michi Stele, tells a story of devotion, progress, and community spirit. The Inari Sankei Michi Stele itself stands as a testament to this transformation. The inscription on the Inari Sankei Michi Stele, erected in July 1895, proudly proclaims its creation by Doi Seiichi. The stele stands approximately 198cm tall, 31cm wide, and 31cm deep. It’s a physical embodiment of the change Seiichi brought to this area. Before this new route, access to Fushimi Inari Shrine was limited to a single narrow road. This posed significant challenges, particularly during festivals and busy periods. Doi Seiichi, a prominent figure in Osaka, recognized this issue and took it upon himself to improve access to the shrine. He bore the considerable financial burden of widening the existing narrow road, transforming it into a more convenient thoroughfare. The stele text reveals the dedication of Doi Seiichi to this project, shouldering the costs for the benefit of the community and worshippers. His actions were not solely motivated by practicality. He saw the new path as a way to enhance the experience of those visiting the shrine. This spirit of generosity echoes the values of Fushimi Inari Shrine, where worshippers seek blessings and good fortune. The Inari Sankei Michi Stele is more than just a marker. It symbolizes a bridge between the past and present. It represents the dedication of one man to improve access to a sacred place. It stands as a reminder of the power of individual action to bring about positive change.
