Here, the autumn begonia whispers tales of resilience and beauty. Imagine a realm where delicate blossoms defy the crisp air. Welcome to the enchanting world of the autumn begonia forest.

Autumn begonias are more than just pretty faces. They represent a rich tapestry of culture and history. In China, they are known as “Xiangsi Cao” or “Duan Chang Hua.” These names translate to “longing herb” and “heartbreak flower”. These names evoke the bittersweet emotions associated with love and separation.

The autumn begonia is a perennial herbaceous plant. It has been cherished as an ornamental flower since the Ming and Qing dynasties. Back then, people planted them in shady areas behind houses or in courtyards. Their ease of propagation made them popular. Cuttings readily root when planted directly into the soil. Even with minimal care, large plantings yield a sea of blooms each autumn.

Begonia’s appeal transcends borders. The French view the autumn begonia as a symbol of true friendship. In Europe and America, it represents cordiality and sincerity. In China, the autumn begonia embodies longing and unrequited love. Legends intertwine with this flower. The tales of tragic romances often feature the autumn begonia as a poignant symbol.

The autumn begonia family is vast and diverse. It comprises two genera. These are Hillebrandia. This genus consists of a single species native to Hawaii. Begonia is the other genus. Begonia boasts an astounding variety of approximately 2,000 species. These species thrive in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

China stands as a major center for autumn begonia diversity. A 2021 report revealed that China has 239 species. It also has 8 natural hybrids and 17 infraspecific taxa. Among them, seven species are under state protection. They are recognized as key protected wild plants.

In 2019, a team led by Tian Dake completed a survey. He is the director of the Begonia Professional Committee. The survey inventoried China’s wild autumn begonia resources. This research provides a foundation for conservation and popularization.

Dong Wenzhen is responsible for registering international begonia cultivars. She aims to assess the conservation status of native Chinese begonias. This work will contribute to the protection and scientific understanding. It will also help provide first-hand information for national wildlife protection. Further surveys are planned for Southeast Asia. The ultimate goal is to create a global inventory of begonia species.

Here in this forest, you can appreciate the diversity of autumn begonias. They offer a spectacle of colors and forms. Whether gracing festive flowerbeds or adorning indoor spaces, they captivate with their beauty.

As we conclude our visit to the autumn begonia forest, remember the lessons it teaches. The autumn begonia is a symbol of friendship, love, and resilience. May its vibrant spirit inspire us to embrace life’s beauty. May we also cherish our connections with nature.
