Gazing across the shimmering expanse of the Pearl River Delta, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link stands as a testament to human ingenuity. This isn’t just a bridge. It’s a symphony of engineering, a bridge-tunnel system weaving together two vibrant cities. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link officially opened in June 2024. It dramatically altered the landscape, slashing travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan to a mere half hour.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link isn’t merely a convenient passage. It’s a symbol of connection and progress. It holds the distinction of being the world’s longest and largest sea passage in the Greater Bay Area. This marvel stretches nearly 24 kilometers, incorporating a bridge, island, tunnel, and even an underwater interchange. The link’s complexity is unparalleled, a true test of engineering prowess. The project navigated challenging conditions. These included high temperatures, humidity, and the ever-present threat of typhoons. Yet, it emerged triumphant, holding ten world records.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link boasts the world’s largest offshore span suspension bridge. Its main span reaches an impressive 1,666 meters. The bridge also claims the highest navigation clearance, a towering 76.5 meters, allowing ships to pass unimpeded. The anchors of this suspension bridge are equally impressive, each containing a staggering 344,000 cubic meters of concrete. Even more, the bridge has withstood wind speeds of up to 83.7 m/s during testing.
Beneath the waves lies another marvel. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Tunnel is the world’s longest bi-directional eight-lane underwater immersed tube tunnel. It stretches over 5 kilometers and comprises 32 segments plus a final joint. The tunnel also holds the record for width. Its standard segments measure 46 meters across, widening to an impressive 55.6 meters at its widest point. Constructing this underwater behemoth required pouring an immense volume of concrete, approximately 29,000 cubic meters per segment. This totaled an astounding 910,000 cubic meters for the entire tunnel. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link also introduced the world’s first underwater highway interchange. This groundbreaking feature further solidifies its place as a pioneering project. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link isn’t just a bridge. It is a symbol of innovation, connecting cities and shortening distances. It represents a giant leap forward in engineering and a testament to the power of human ambition.
