A marvel of modern engineering the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link a bridge-tunnel system stretches across the Pearl River Delta. This impressive structure connects Shenzhen and Zhongshan two major cities. Its construction began in May 2017. The project cost around US$4.83 billion. It opened on June 30 2024.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link isn’t just about transportation. It’s a symbol of ambition. It represents Shenzhen’s drive to overcome challenges. The city had originally hoped to be part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. A double-Y design was proposed. However China’s government chose a single-Y design. Shenzhen was left out. Undeterred Shenzhen proposed a separate link to Zhongshan in 2008. The idea was shelved for years. It was eventually revived and included in Guangdong’s 12th five-year plan.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is more than just a bridge. It’s a 49.7 kilometer system. A 6.7 kilometer tunnel starts on the Shenzhen side. Nineteen bridges total 43 kilometers. The longest continuous bridge section is approximately 22.5 kilometers. About 15.5 kilometers of this section stretches above the sea. The bridge boasts four lanes in each direction. It allows vehicles to travel at a maximum speed of 100 km/h.
The bridge connects major expressways. It links the Guangshen Expressway to the south of Shenzhen airport. It also connects the Jihe Expressway east of the airport. On the western side it joins the Zhongjiang Expressway. This efficient link drastically reduced travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan. It takes less than 30 minutes now.
Despite initial congestion issues the bridge quickly proved popular. Over three million vehicles crossed in its first month. Shenzhen even created inter-city bus lines between the two cities. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link stands as a testament to engineering prowess. It represents a connection between two vibrant cities.
