Established centuries ago, Fukushoji Temple has a rich history intertwined with the rise and fall of emperors. Legend has it that the temple was first built in the ancient capital of Omi. It fell into disrepair but was later resurrected by a devoted monk named Kakusai Sojun. He rebuilt Fukushoji temple in Kyoto during the years 1257 to 1259. The temple’s serene atmosphere captivated emperors. Two emperors, Emperor Go-Nijo and Emperor Go-Daigo, frequented Fukushoji. They sought solace and spiritual guidance within its sacred walls. The temple became known as “Hanamizu-dera,” or “Flower Viewing Temple,” due to the stunning cherry blossom trees planted nearby. Today, the temple stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and beauty. It is a place where visitors can step back from the bustling city.
