Did the enshrined deity at Kamida Tenmangu Shrine ever blush? Let’s uncover the intriguing story of this shrine, marked by the Kamida Tenmangu Stele, here in Osaka. Kamida Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, holds a unique tradition. During the annual festival, sacred sake is offered to a hanging portrait of Michizane. Legend says, his face flushes red after partaking of the divine drink.

The shrine’s history is fascinating. Records from 1686 suggest Kamida Tenmangu Shrine originally stood east of a canal in Shimodama. It faced another shrine across the river in the old village of Yotsuyatsu. During festivals at the Yotsuyatsu shrine, divine palanquins were received from Kamida Tenmangu Shrine, returning there once the festivities ended. The shrine relocated to its current location in 1659. This move marked the beginning of the tradition of offering sake to Michizane’s portrait during the annual festival.

Within the shrine grounds stands a remarkable camphor tree. It’s estimated to be over 800 years old, its trunk measuring 10 meters in circumference and reaching a height of approximately 30 meters. This ancient tree, a silent witness to centuries of history, adds to the serene atmosphere of Kamida Tenmangu Shrine. Also within the shrine grounds is the Yasaka Shrine, originally located at Honmyoji Temple and later moved here during the Meiji era.

The Kamida Tenmangu Stele, standing as a testament to the shrine’s history, invites you to reflect on the passage of time. It speaks of traditions maintained and stories whispered through generations. Imagine the scene: the vibrant festival, the offering of sake, and the subtle blush on Michizane’s portrait. This blend of history and legend makes Kamida Tenmangu Shrine a captivating destination. Its story, etched in the stele and whispered by the ancient camphor tree, leaves a lasting impression, a memory of a place where the divine and the human intertwine.
