Chengdu was a regional metropolis. It thrived in trade. Shu Brocade lacquerware and tea flourished. It was the heart of lacquer craft and the birthplace of tea culture. Brocade boomed. The central government appointed an officer to oversee the industry. The city gained the name Jin Guan City. Jin Guan was the officer’s title. Jin referred to brocades. Meng Chang the last emperor of the Later Shu State lived in Chengdu. He ruled from 934-965 AD. His wife loved flowers. He ordered hibiscus planted along the city wall. Another account says it was to fortify the city wall. Chengdu became known as Furong City or Rong City.

Chengdu was a leading city in China during the Song Dynasty. Brocades from Chengdu had more patterns. They made up 70% of tributes to the royal court. There were markets for silkworms herbs medicine and flowers. Lantern fairs bustled. Because of thriving commerce Jiao Zi the world’s first paper currency was issued in Chengdu. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties wars devastated Chengdu. Pestilence struck. The population fell. Emperor Kangxi moved people from rich southern provinces to Sichuan. Businessmen also immigrated. Chengdu slowly recovered.

After the Opium War Chengdu declined due to chaos and wars. Chongqing became more important. After the People’s Republic of China Chengdu became a major city in western China. It grew rapidly.
