Gazing upon Iwata Shrine, can you sense the echoes of ancient whispers? This unassuming shrine, nestled within the heart of Osaka, holds a history as captivating as the city itself. Iwata Shrine’s story begins in the 6th century, during the reign of Emperor Kinmei. Legend tells of a stone boat resting in a nearby rice paddy. Three deities, later enshrined here, appeared on this mystical vessel. The shrine was built to honor them, marking the beginning of Iwata Shrine’s long and storied existence. Iwata Shrine is also known as Iwatahashi Hachimangu or Iwata Hachimangu. This reflects the enshrinement of Hachiman, the god of war, alongside the original three deities: Empress Suiko, Emperor Bidatsu, and Empress Jingu. The original three deities are connected to a local legend about a stone boat. This boat is said to have appeared in the rice paddies near the shrine’s location. Physical remnants of this legend can still be found. Two small, circular mounds, known as “Koshinzuka” and “Mumei no Tsuka,” are believed to be parts of the ancient stone boat. They rest north of the shrine, a testament to the enduring power of local folklore. Iwata Shrine offers a glimpse into Osaka’s rich spiritual heritage, a tranquil escape from the city’s vibrant energy.
