Don’t let its simplicity fool you. This stele, erected in October 1997, marks a site steeped in history and shrouded in local lore. The inscription, by the renowned artist Morii Yutaka, commemorates the Chokensho, a resting place for the spirits of deities during their travels. It’s said that in the Nara period, during the reign of Emperor Temmu, barley miraculously sprouted overnight in massive quantities, a phenomenon known as the “Mugi no Miya”. An oracle interpreted this as a sign, advising the Emperor to establish shrines dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami and the deity of Mount Otokoyama to protect the southern capital. This event, intertwined with the Ishida Jinja Chokensho Stele, offers a glimpse into the beliefs and practices of ancient Japan, a testament to the enduring power of faith and the reverence for the natural world.
