“Dancing Chinese fans” or “curved sails?” What do you see when you look at Wangjing SOHO? This trio of skyscrapers makes a statement on Beijing’s skyline. Wangjing SOHO is a complex of three towers. They stand in Wangjing between central Beijing and the airport.

Let’s explore the story behind this modern architectural marvel. The complex officially opened on September 20, 2014. It quickly became known for its unique design.

The renowned architect Zaha Hadid designed Wangjing SOHO. Hadid was Iraqi. The Telegraph described the towers’ walls as evoking “dancing Chinese fans.” Der Spiegel said they resembled “curved sails.” These sails appear to swim across the Earth when viewed from above. Arch Daily calls them “three curved towers.” Their shimmering, metallic skin unifies the complex. Each volume seems to “dance” around the others.

Pan Shiyi is the Chairman of the Board of SOHO China. He said the design evokes Koi. Koi are a traditional Chinese symbol. They represent wealth, luck, health, and happiness.

The towers contain both office and retail space. Originally, the SOHO was planned as two towers. Height concerns led to a redesign. It became a three-tower project with lower maximum heights. The tallest tower is the seventh-tallest woman-designed building in the world.

Interestingly, Wangjing SOHO’s design faced imitation. The Meiquan 22nd Century building in Chongqing allegedly pirated the design. Some say the Chongqing project obtained digital details of the SOHO project. This put pressure on Hadid to complete her project first. Zaha Hadid Architects took legal measures.

The towers range from 200 to 249 meters in height. The towers have spacious lobbies with high ceilings. The design seeks to present itself as a symbol of modern technology. The complex was built using innovative solutions. The facade features a window wall system with double-insulated, unitized low-E glass.

Wangjing SOHO also incorporates sustainable features. It obtained LEED Gold pre-certification. The building reduces carbon dioxide emissions. It also reduces potable water consumption and energy use. Around 40% of the water is recycled.

Despite some controversy, Wangjing SOHO remains an iconic example of modern architecture. Its distinctive, curved structure has created an identity for the Wangjing neighborhood. This area is home to cultural institutions and IT companies. So next time you see Wangjing SOHO, remember the dancing sails and the story behind this Beijing landmark.
