“A memorial to a lost emperor? Right here?” you ask, perplexed, staring at the unassuming stone. It’s easy to miss the 真言宗 豊乗碑 here in Kyoto, tucked away amongst the grander temples and shrines. But don’t let its simplicity fool you. This weathered stone marks the site where history, faith, and imperial power once intertwined. The inscription on this modest monument tells a somber tale. It speaks of the Shingon sect’s Toyojoyama Temple, once a prominent landmark, now lost to the passage of time. The temple, dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, held a special place in the heart of Emperor Go-Shirakawa. He was so moved by the temple’s compassionate spirit that he bestowed upon it generous patronage. Imagine the emperor, perhaps seeking solace from the turmoil of his reign, finding peace within these very walls. But as with all things, time marches on. In 1506, Toyojoyama Temple, along with countless others, was ravaged by fire, a casualty of the tumultuous Onin War that swept through Kyoto. The emperor’s favored sanctuary, reduced to ashes. Yet, the memory of Toyojoyama Temple, like the faint outline of its foundation stones, endures in the bustling heart of Kyoto, a testament to the ebb and flow of history and the enduring power of faith.
