Shinnyoji Temple’s story begins long ago. According to “Higashinari-gunshi”, Shinnyoji Temple was founded between 1492 and 1501. This was during the Meio era. Shinnyoji’s history is closely tied to Rennyo.
In the “Kanmon Nikki” by Kosho, the 10th head priest of Honganji Temple. The names of Koji Temple and Myosai in Fukae appear. Shinnyoji Temple’s influence was already spreading at that time. Documents related to Shinnyoji Temple date back to 1611. These are later than “Kanmon Nikki”. They include an image of Rennyo and a wooden statue inscription. Both mention “Fukae Village”. This reveals Shinnyoji Temple’s presence in Fukae. Junnyo, the 12th head priest of the Honganji Temple sect, authenticated these artifacts. These materials are the oldest historical records linked to Fukae.
The image of Rennyo is distinctive. The eyebrows are thick. The nose is prominent. The face is long and refined. It is an unusual portrait. It is a rare depiction of Rennyo.
Shinnyoji Temple is linked to Sanada Yukimura. Sanada Yukimura built Sanada Maru. It was a fort southeast of Osaka Castle. It was built during the winter campaign. Shinganji Temple was rebuilt in 1622. It honored Sanada Yukimura and his son Daisuke. The Unno clan helped rebuild Shinnyoji Temple. The Unno clan were ancestors of the Sanada clan.
Kyoto Mimawarigumi members are buried at Shinganji Temple. Katsura Hayanosuke and Watanabe Yoshitaro are among them. They were involved in the Sakamoto Ryoma assassination. The Mimawarigumi fought in the Toba-Fushimi battle.
