Did you know Shinnyo-do’s Amida statue nods? Legend says the monk-sculptor asked the statue about its purpose. It nodded three times agreeing to protect Kyoto’s poor and women. Shinnyo-do officially Shinshogokuraku-ji means the true temple of paradise. It’s a Tendai Buddhist temple east of Kyoto. Founded in 984 it’s a hidden gem. Few tourists know about Shinnyo-do. It houses a precious Amida statue plus paintings and two dry gardens.

Shinnyo-do’s autumn beauty is breathtaking. Maple leaves transform the outer enclosure into a fiery red tunnel. The temple is also known for its ascetic Nenbutsu practice. Monks chant Amida’s name relentlessly. You can hear the chanting throughout the grounds.

Inside Shinnyo-do you’ll find the main hall the Hondo. Photography is prohibited. This respects the sacred space. The Hondo’s decoration is lavish. The Amida Nyorai triad is remarkable. Next you visit the Shoin pavilion. This overlooks two dry gardens.

The Nehan no niwa or Nirvana Garden evokes Buddha’s final moments. Larger stones represent Buddha’s body. Smaller stones are his disciples and paradise creatures. This shakkei garden borrows the Higashiyama mountains as a backdrop. Zuien no niwa a modern garden from 2010 is geometrically striking. It uses various colored gravels. You can sit and contemplate the beauty of both gardens.

Outside Shinnyo-do a three-story pagoda stands tall. A peaceful path leads to the back. This is a colorful tunnel of maple trees in autumn. Quiet wooden buildings and a graveyard are there. It’s a place for quiet contemplation.

Shinnyo-do offers beauty peace and a contemplative atmosphere. It’s truly a memorable Kyoto experience. The vibrant autumn colours are incredible. Consider walking there from Heian-jingu or the Philosopher’s Path. It’s a journey to serenity and spiritual renewal.
