Perched beside Jixiang Road stands a testament to time. We are here at Panlong Ancestral Residence. It is also known as Panlong Enclosure. Let’s step back into the Qing Dynasty.

Panlong Ancestral Residence sits in Laokeng Community. It is found in Longtian Subdistrict, Pingshan District of Shenzhen. This historic Hakka compound dates back to 1864. Imagine life here during the reign of Emperor Tongzhi.

Designated as an immovable cultural relic in 2018. The residence preserves traditional Hakka architecture. It offers a glimpse into a bygone era. This Qing Dynasty Hakka enclosed compound spans 1,780 square meters. It features three main halls and four watchtowers. These architectural elements reflect the history.

Notice the building’s orientation. It faces southeast. The structure is brick and wood. Rammed earth walls support the wooden beam frames. Small green tiles cover the roofs.

Look closely at the murals inside Panlong Ancestral Residence. They are in the central hall and corridors. Each wall features two paintings. In total there are four. They cover five square meters. These murals depict Hakka people’s aspirations. They show the desire for prosperous businesses and happy family lives. Folk artists created these vivid scenes. The murals offer insight into Hakka culture.

Panlong Ancestral Residence faced disrepair due to age. Many houses collapsed. Walls cracked. Restoration was complex. Workers used ancient techniques to restore the residence. Brick by brick it was rebuilt. After more than a year the residence regained its original appearance.

In August 2023, Panlong Ancestral Residence hosted an art season. The Panlong Ancestral Residence Site-specific Art Season featured exhibitions. There were markets and community activities. This event breathed new life into the historic site. It allowed more people to appreciate Hakka culture. The art season promoted the fusion of tradition and innovation.

Panlong Ancestral Residence stands as a bridge. It connects the past and the present. It enriches the cultural lives of the public. As you leave, remember the stories held within these walls.
