Who would guess that such vibrant beauty thrives so close to a bustling metropolis? Here at Baihua Mountain National Nature Reserve, just 62 miles from Beijing’s city center, nature unfolds in a breathtaking spectacle. Established in 1985 and elevated to national reserve status in 2008, Baihua Mountain cradles a world of wonders within its 7,413 acres. Baihua Mountain, meaning “One Hundred Flowers Mountain,” earns its name. From May to August, a riot of color erupts across its slopes, a true ocean of flowers. Even in the heart of summer, rare blooms like Philadelphus pekinensis and weigelas paint the landscape. Autumn brings its own enchantment, blanketing the Marshy Grassland Scenic Area in chrysanthemums and the sweet bounty of fruit trees. This verdant sanctuary boasts an astounding variety of plant life. Over 1,100 plant species from 485 categories and 130 families call Baihua Mountain home, including ten distinct forest communities and four vegetation types. This diversity extends to the animal kingdom. Baihua Mountain shelters over 170 animal species, a natural zoo in the heart of North China. Keep your eyes peeled for leopards, gorals, brown-eared pheasants, and black storks, all rare and nationally protected. Dominating the skyline, Baihua Mountain’s main peak reaches 6,722 feet, the third highest in Beijing. From this vantage point, the surrounding ranges of East and West Ling Mountain seem to bow before you. Below, the alpine Marshy Grassland stretches out at 6,532 feet. From here, you can take in the full grandeur of Baihua Mountain, gazing across the valley at the majestic East Ling Mountain. Notice the winding paths that snake along the steep mountain ridges. Marvel at the engineering feat that carved these zigzagging trails into the mountain’s face. Imagine standing atop Baihua Mountain’s main peak, the wind whipping through your hair, the world spread out before you.
