Lost in Beijing’s labyrinthine streets? Let me guide you. We stand at Baiziwan South First Road a seemingly ordinary street. But its history is far from ordinary. This seemingly unremarkable road in Chaoyang District holds a unique place in Beijing’s urban tapestry. It’s a vital artery connecting major thoroughfares. It’s also a living testament to Beijing’s evolving urban landscape.

Baiziwan South First Road is approximately 4000 meters long. That’s about 2.5 miles. It runs east-west. Its eastern end starts near Guangbai East Road. The western end reaches Zhonghua Road. It bisects Dongsihuan Road. To the north lies Baiziwan Road. To the south runs Baiziwan South Second Road.

Construction on Baiziwan South First Road began in 2005. Sections between Zhonghua Road and Jiulongshan Road were completed by 2007. However a section between Jiulongshan Road and Xidali Road remains unfinished. This split the road into two separate sections. This incomplete stretch is between the Shijingshan District and Fengtai District.

In 2013 a Central Academy of Fine Arts graduate named Su Boyuan used his own name for the road. He hung a street sign. This became a quirky artistic installation. However it violated naming regulations. The government removed the Su Boyuan Road signs in July 2017. This event triggered significant media attention. It highlighted the complexities of Beijing’s street naming processes. The government’s quick response showcased their commitment to official regulations.

Baiziwan South First Road’s story is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a microcosm of Beijing. It reflects the city’s constant growth and change. It’s a story of official planning and unplanned creativity. Next time you stroll along Baiziwan South First Road take a moment to appreciate its hidden stories. Think of the aspirations of Su Boyuan and the quiet persistence of urban planning. This road holds a unique story in the beating heart of Beijing.
