Roy Lichtenstein’s “Osaka Vicki” is adapted from one of his super-sized comic panels. It’s big. It’s bold. It’s just like Osaka. This giant artwork stands as a testament to Osaka’s vibrant spirit. We are standing before the 白昼夢 Sculpture.

This sculpture is no ordinary piece. Osaka City sought donations from local companies. They installed 29 works of art. Famous artists like Rodin and Kotaro Takamura are included.

Roy Lichtenstein created “Osaka Vicki” in 1997-8. It reworks his earlier piece Vicki. I Thought I Heard Your Voice! He added framing elements and altered dimensions. The goal was to fit the side of a cooling tower. This tower supported the new Crysta Nagahori underground shopping mall.

Takeshi Fukuda was the mall’s environmental designer. He wanted something that symbolized America. It also needed to liven up the bland cooling tower. Isamu Suzuki oversaw its maintenance for years. People often describe it as just like Osaka.

“Osaka Vicki” is thirty-seven meters high. It is fifteen meters wide. The Benday-dot painting features a blonde woman. A man with his back turned opens a door. The artwork stands on the south side of Nagahori-dori Avenue. This is a main artery of Osaka City. It is a few blocks west of Shinsaibashi Station. The location is on the northern edge of America-Mura. This district is popular with young people.

The 白昼夢 Sculpture and other public artworks enhance Osaka’s urban landscape. They reflect the city’s unique culture. Osaka has a long history. It predates Tokyo and Kyoto.

These works add vitality to the city. They offer moments of surprise and delight. Keep an eye out for art. It may appear where you least expect it.
