Have you ever heard of a shrine named after white flags? Right here, before Shirahata Tenjinsha Shrine, stands a testament to a pivotal moment in Japanese history. Shirahata Tenjinsha Shrine, nestled in the Sugano district of Ichikawa, Chiba, whispers tales of samurai and scholars. In 1180, Minamoto no Yoritomo, after a bitter defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama, raised white flags on this very spot. He declared this area his base as he prepared to march to the Shimousa provincial government. This act gave Shirahata Tenjinsha Shrine its name, “shirahata” meaning “white flags”. The shrine’s history extends beyond Yoritomo. Records suggest that the shrine buildings were renovated around 1584, possibly with the help of Ota Dokan, the renowned samurai who designed Edo Castle. The shrine grounds, encompassing nearly 2,000 square meters, offer a serene escape. They blossom with flowers throughout the year. Shirahata Tenjinsha Shrine is also deeply connected to literary figures. Kafu Nagai, a prominent Japanese author, frequently sought solace within the shrine’s peaceful embrace. He often wrote under the trees, finding inspiration in the quiet surroundings. His diary, “Danchotei Nichijo,” mentions the shrine numerous times, recounting his walks, his simple meals of boiled eggs and milk purchased nearby, and the tranquility he found reading under the trees. Another literary giant, Rohan Koda, lived near Shirahata Tenjinsha during his later years. He completed his masterpiece, “Basho Shichibu shu Hyoshaku,” just a short distance from this sacred ground. Beyond its literary connections, the shrine houses framed calligraphy by Katsu Kaishu, a key figure in the final days of the Tokugawa Shogunate. This calligraphy, along with a painting by Shibata Zeshin, are designated as important cultural properties. Every February 20th, the shrine holds a unique “Yu no Hana Matsuri” (Hot Water Flower Festival). During this festival, hot water is poured over a large pot. The droplets are then sprinkled onto participants using Japanese pampas grass. This ritual is believed to ward off illness and misfortune. The pampas grass leaves, taken home and treasured for a year, are then burned in a bonfire the following year. Shirahata Tenjinsha Shrine, a place where history, literature, and spiritual tradition intertwine, invites you to explore its rich tapestry of stories.
