“This temple,” our guide began, pointing to a structure perched upon the hill, “holds centuries of stories within its walls.” We stood before the White Pagoda Temple, a Yuan dynasty marvel erected in honor of a Tibetan monk. Unlike its namesake in Hohhot, this White Pagoda, bathed in the afternoon sun, watched over the city of Lanzhou from its peaceful residence in White Pagoda Park. The air hummed with the energy of its history. “The climb to reach the temple is a journey in itself,” our guide continued. “A series of steps wind their way up the hillside, but for those who prefer a more leisurely ascent, a cable car awaits on the park’s south side.” As we began our climb, the guide pointed out the intricate carvings that adorned the base of the pagoda. Names and dates, etched into the stone, served as a testament to the many travelers who had made this pilgrimage before us. “These carvings,” he explained, “date back to a time before the pagoda received official protection. Back then, visitors would leave their mark, a permanent reminder of their journey.” Reaching the summit, we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. The Yellow River snaked its way through the cityscape, glistening like a ribbon under the afternoon sun. The White Pagoda Temple, a silent sentinel against the passage of time, provided a serene escape from the bustling city below.
