Imagine planning a town for 4500 people. That was the idea behind building what is now the Kumiyama Town립Higashikado Elementary School.
Welcome to Kumiyama Town립Higashikado Elementary School. This school began as a branch of Kumiyama Town립Sazuyama Elementary School. The town planned a large housing complex. It was called the Japan Housing Corporation Kumiyama Complex. The area needed its own school.
The planners considered four key things. The school had to be close to the housing. It needed enough land in an urbanized area. The location had to fit future growth. The land had to be suitable for a school. In November 1974 the name Higashikado Elementary School was chosen. The school opened in April 1975.
Interestingly, the school received an award. In 1976 it was honored for excellence in school lunch programs by the Minister of Education. A north school building was added in March 1977. An attached kindergarten opened in 1978. The north building expanded in 1980. It gained eight classrooms.
In 1991, the school installed a computer room. The gymnasium’s exterior walls were renovated in 1999. Air conditioners were installed in the lunchroom in 2002. Earthquake resistance work on the south building finished in 2003. The north building also had earthquake strengthening done. This plus renovations were completed in 2006. More large-scale renovations to the north building followed in 2007.
