“Ever heard of a shrine moving mountains?” No literally. That’s how the story of 由岐神社御旅所 Stele in Kyoto begins.

We are standing before the 由岐神社御旅所 Stele. It marks a place of deep history and even deeper spirituality. This site isn’t just a landmark it’s a testament to Kyoto’s enduring cultural traditions.

由岐神社 is a Shinto shrine. It is located in Sakyo Ward. More precisely it is nestled in the heart of the enchanting Kurama mountain area. This shrine is not just any shrine. It is closely tied to Kurama-dera Temple. It acts as its guardian shrine.

Now let us dive into its past. In 940 AD Emperor Suzaku sought peace. The land was troubled by earthquakes and unrest. He ordered that the deities enshrined within the Imperial Palace be moved. Their new home was on Mount Kurama. This marked the beginning of 由岐神社.

Legend says that when the deities arrived locals greeted them. They carried torches to light the way. This is believed to be the origin of the Kurama Fire Festival. This festival is one of Kyoto’s three great fire festivals. During the festival people carry torches. They parade through the streets in a dazzling display of fire.

由岐神社 became known as Yuki Myojin. This translates to “Snow Bright God.” It earned this name because people offered Yuki which are arrows to the shrine. They prayed for peace during times of illness.

Interestingly 由岐神社 shares its deities with the Gojo Tenjinsha Shrine. Both enshrine the same gods. This connection highlights the intricate web of Kyoto’s religious landscape.

Until the Edo period Hasso Myojin stood alone on Kurama Mountain. These were guardian shrines of Kurama-dera Temple. However a fire destroyed them in 1814. They were then moved to be enshrined with 由岐神社.

The main hall and worship hall were rebuilt in 1607. This was thanks to Toyotomi Hideyori. The worship hall is unique. It is split into two rooms with a passage in the center. This is a rare Momoyama-style architectural design.

Today 由岐神社 continues to be a place of reverence. It is a site for the local community and visitors alike. The shrine is free to enter. However since it is within the Kurama-dera Temple grounds an entrance fee is required.

So here we stand at the 由岐神社御旅所 Stele. It serves as a quiet reminder. It stands as a testament to the shrine’s vibrant history.
