Considering how many Tanaka Shrines exist in Kyoto. I always double-check the address. We’re here at Tanaka Shrine. This one is called the god of winning horses.
Tanaka Shrine has gathered faith from horse racing fans. Many come to pray for victory. It is located near the Kyoto Racecourse. People believe this is why it became known as a horse god. The exact reason for this association remains unclear.
Wooden horse statues stand guard at the worship hall. These horses symbolize faith. People believe they represent the shrine’s dedication to horses.
But Tanaka Shrine is not only about winning horses. It also grants blessings. These include protection from evil. It brings good luck. Safe childbirth. Treasure. Prosperity for descendants.
The shrine’s history goes back to the Heian period. Around that time, the deity Gozu Tenno was brought from Yasaka Shrine. It was enshrined in the Tanaka area of Shimouobayashi.
During the Warring States period, a flood swept away the shrine. It floated to its current location. The shrine remained unharmed. Locals were amazed by this event. They rebuilt the shrine here.
The main hall dates to 1816. The worship hall was rebuilt in 1996. Some say this is also called Tobu Tanaka Shrine. But the origin of that name is unclear.
Inside the shrine, a small shrine faces north. This is Hokomushi Hachimangu. Legend says Prince Tokihira suffered from boils during the Heian period. His mother prayed at Hachiman Shrine. Her prayers cured him. The prince’s father then built the small shrine facing north. This was to protect the imperial palace. The shrine’s northern orientation protects Kyoto.
To reach Tanaka Shrine, take the city bus. Get off at Yokodai Keisatsusho-mae. It is a seven-minute walk from there. You can also walk from Chushojima Station. It is about 22 minutes away.
