Across the sprawling expanse of time, imagine the grandeur of Yuanmingyuan. This “Garden of Gardens” once flourished across over 5,000 acres. Yuanmingyuan was more than just a garden. It was a vibrant tapestry woven with lakes, rivers, and palaces, a testament to imperial power and artistic vision. From 1707, Yuanmingyuan served as a summer retreat, a recreational haven, and a royal library for emperors Yongzheng, Qianlong, Jiaqing, Daoguang, and Xianfeng. For over 150 years, Yuanmingyuan pulsed with life. Political decisions were made here. Imperial celebrations echoed through its halls. Even birthdays were marked within these historic walls. Imagine the whispers of emperors past, discussing matters of state amidst the serene beauty.

Yuanmingyuan’s allure extended beyond traditional Chinese aesthetics. Nestled within the northeast corner of Changchunyuan, a surprise awaited visitors: the European Palaces. These palaces, the first large-scale imitation of Western-style gardens in China, became known as the “Versailles of the East”. The fusion of Eastern and Western architectural styles created a unique spectacle, a testament to the cultural exchange of the era. European Jesuit missionaries, figures like the Italian painter Giuseppe Castiglione, brought their knowledge and artistry to the Qing court. Emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong embraced these new influences, commissioning Western-style mansions like Haiyantang (Hall of Calm Seas) and Yuanyingguan (Observatory of Distant Oceans). The Dashuifa (Grand Fountain), a marvel of engineering, combined Chinese craftsmanship with Western technology.

The iconic twelve bronze zodiac heads, originally part of a water clock fountain outside Haiyantang, offer a glimpse into the grandeur of Yuanmingyuan. Designed by Jesuit Michel Benoist, the fountain featured a two-meter tall clamshell stone sculpture. From this central point, two rows of six pedestals radiated outwards. Each pedestal held a bronze animal head atop a human-like stone body, clothed in traditional Chinese attire and holding a jade scepter. These figures, representing the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, would spout water every two hours. At noon, all twelve heads would spring to life, creating a breathtaking water show. These heads, tragically looted in 1860 during the Second Opium War, are now powerful symbols of cultural heritage and the ongoing efforts to repatriate lost artifacts. The story of Yuanmingyuan is a reminder of the ephemeral nature of beauty and the enduring power of memory. Though much of its physical splendor is gone, its story continues to resonate, inspiring awe and contemplation.
