When was the College of Urban and Environmental Studies established? The Beijing University College of Urban and Environmental Studies stands proudly before you. Its history is deeply entwined with the evolution of geographical education in Beijing.

The roots of the college stretch back to the early 20th century. Beijing University’s earliest geography teaching dates back to the early 1900s. However a formal Geography Department was not established until much later. In 1917-1919 Professor Chen Huan lectured on ‘A History of Geographic Development in China’. This marked the start of Geography education at Peking University.

The college’s development significantly overlapped with that of Tsinghua University’s geography programs. Tsinghua established its Geography Department in 1928. Both universities contributed significantly to the field. During the war years both Beijing and Tsinghua universities merged their geography programs. After the war they separated again. Beijing University’s Geography Department became the core of what we know today as the College of Urban and Environmental Studies.

The college underwent several name changes and reorganizations. It became the Department of Geography and Geology. Later it was renamed the Department of City and Environmental Studies. Finally in 2007 it received its current name. The college plays a leading role in environmental research and education in China.

The College of Urban and Environmental Studies didn’t emerge overnight. It reflects decades of dedication. The legacy of pioneering geographers and educators shaped it. The college continues to respond to the urgent challenges facing urban areas. It tackles environmental issues through innovative research and teaching. This building represents a commitment to a sustainable future for Beijing and China. It’s a center for cutting-edge research. It’s a hub for the next generation of environmental stewards. The College of Urban and Environmental Studies is a vital part of Beijing University and the city itself.
