The Ikunitama Shrine Stele marks a place of deep spiritual significance. It connects to the Ikunitama Shrine, a place revered for centuries. The shrine’s story begins long ago, possibly even predating the famed Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. Legend says Emperor Jinmu, Japan’s first emperor, established Ikunitama Shrine near the present-day Osaka Castle. This would place its origins in the 5th century. The shrine’s original deities, Ikushima-no-kami and Tarushima-no-kami, are rarely enshrined elsewhere in Japan. This adds to Ikunitama Shrine’s unique character. In 1583, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the powerful warlord, decided to build his grand castle. This led to the relocation of Ikunitama Shrine to its present location. A mere two years later, the main hall was constructed, showcasing the unique “Ikutama zukuri” style. This architectural marvel featured a single roof connecting two buildings and an unprecedented three gables. The Ikutama Summer Festival, held annually on July 11th and 12th, is one of Osaka’s three major festivals. This vibrant celebration features a procession of the Makura Daiko drum and worshippers in striking red caps. Ikunitama Shrine is more than just the main hall. Within its grounds, eleven sub-shrines honor various deities. Among them is the Yodo-dono Shrine, frequented by Hideyoshi’s wife.
