\u751f\u547d\u4e0e\u6d77\u6d0b\u79d1\u5b66\u5b66\u9662\uff08A5\uff09 has a rich history. Its roots go back to 1989. It started as the Laboratory of Life Sciences. Later in 1997 the Department of Bioengineering was founded. The College of Life Sciences was established in 2002. Academician Jiazan Ni of the Chinese Academy of Sciences became the first dean. In 2015, it was renamed the College of Life Sciences and Oceanography.
The college boasts renowned faculty members. This includes academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. \u751f\u547d\u4e0e\u6d77\u6d0b\u79d1\u5b66\u5b66\u9662\uff08A5\uff09 offers four undergraduate programs. These are Biotechnology Biological Sciences Biological Sciences and Marine Sciences. Biotechnology is a top-ranked major in Guangdong Province. Biological Sciences is a distinctive major in Guangdong too.
The college offers master’s degrees in biology ecology and pharmacy. It also offers a Ph.D. degree in biology. Teaching and research are well-equipped. The total value amounts to 300 million RMB. The college features key laboratories. These cover life sciences and marine sciences.
There are three key research platforms of Guangdong Province. These are the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory for Plant Epigenetics. Another is the Guangdong Technology Research Center for Marine Algae Bioengineering. The last one is the Biological Science Teaching Experimental Center. There are also three Shenzhen key laboratories. These include the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Microbial Genetic Engineering. Another one is the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Marine Bioresource and Eco-environmental Science. The last one is the Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory for Marine Algal Biotechnology. Finally, there are nine university-level institutes and centers.
\u751f\u547d\u4e0e\u6d77\u6d0b\u79d1\u5b66\u5b66\u9662\uff08A5\uff09 is dedicated to scientific research and innovation. Over the past 5 years it undertook 189 research projects. The total funding was nearly 260 million RMB. This included two key research plans from the Ministry of Science and Technology. Also 71 national natural science fund projects were undertaken. The college obtained two scientific and technological achievement awards. It also got 100 national invention patent authorizations. Furthermore, it published 1039 SCI-indexed papers. This included two publications in Nature.
The college aims to cultivate innovative students. There is an Innovation Experiment Class and an Entrepreneurship Practice Class. There is also an Ocean Elite Class. The college cooperates with over 70 biotechnology companies in Shenzhen. This implements the Industry-University-Research talent training program. Students have achieved outstanding results. This includes international and domestic competitions. They have won prizes in major competitions. The iGEM team has won gold and bronze medals.
