Hyōtanyama Inari Jinja is recognized as one of Japan’s three great Inari shrines. It is dedicated to Ukemochi no Okami, the deity of food and prosperity. He transferred the Fukube Inari, a harvest god, from Fushimi Momoyama Castle to this very spot, enshrining it as a guardian deity. The name “Hyōtanyama” itself comes from the shape of the mound, resembling a bottle gourd, or “hyōtan”. This shrine also holds a unique distinction. It’s renowned as the headquarters of “tsujiura” fortune-telling. This ancient practice, involving observing passersby or using fire and other methods, continues to intrigue visitors today. Three distinct forms of tsujiura are practiced here: “Tsujiura Hanja”, observing people; “Tsujiura Omikuji”, employing fire; and “Tsujiura Hyōtan Sasa”, which is believed to be the origin of fortune cookies. Within the shrine grounds, you’ll find other deities honored as well. Sugawara Shrine, dedicated to the god of learning, offers a place for those seeking academic success.
