“A lord, pursued by a vengeful spirit…” The old woman’s voice trailed off, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she looked at our group. Right here, nestled along this unassuming street, stands the Kitsune no Hashi Dainichinyorai, a reminder of Kyoto’s rich past. Don’t let its modest appearance fool you, this wayside shrine echoes with a tale as dramatic as any Kabuki play. Imagine, if you will, Kyoto five centuries ago. A powerful lord, fleeing for his life from a vengeful spirit, found himself cornered by a wide river. As the ghostly wails grew closer, a booming voice echoed from the riverbank “Offer your lute and you shall be spared!”. Desperate, the lord obeyed, casting his prized possession into the water. Silence fell. The spirit vanished. To commemorate his narrow escape, the lord ordered a bridge built on this very spot, forever known as “Kitsune no Hashi” or “Fox Bridge”. The shrine we see today is a later addition, dedicated to Dainichinyorai, the cosmic Buddha. But look closely–can you almost hear the echo of the lord’s lute and the chilling cries of that vengeful spirit?
