A whisper of incense hangs heavy in the air. Welcome to the Yonghe Temple a breathtaking testament to Tibetan Buddhism in the heart of Beijing.

This isn’t just any temple. It began life in 1694 as a prince’s residence. Prince Yong Yinzhen the fourth son of the Kangxi Emperor called it home. He later became the Yongzheng Emperor. Can you imagine the imperial life lived within these very walls?

The Yongzheng Emperor’s son the future Qianlong Emperor was born here in the East Academy. After his father’s death his coffin even rested in the temple for two years. A rather unusual detail isn’t it? A truly royal resting place before its final journey.

In 1744 the Qianlong Emperor transformed this princely residence. He decreed it a lamasery a grand Tibetan Buddhist monastery. The turquoise roof tiles were replaced with the imperial yellow a dramatic shift in purpose and status.

The temple’s layout is awe-inspiring. Follow the central axis northwards. You’ll pass through courtyards and magnificent halls. Each one is more impressive than the last.

The Hall of Harmony and Peace is the main hall. Three colossal bronze Buddhas of the Three Ages dominate its interior. The Gautama Buddha stands in the center flanked by the Buddhas of the past and future.

Another marvel awaits in the Pavilion of Ten Thousand Happinesses. Here resides an eighteen-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha carved from a single piece of white sandalwood. The seventh Dalai Lama gifted this incredible sculpture. It took three years to reach Beijing from Tibet. It is one of three Yonghe Temple artworks in the Guinness Book of Records. Quite a feat of engineering and devotion.

The Yonghe Temple survived the Cultural Revolution. This is thanks to Premier Zhou Enlai’s intervention. The temple’s survival is a testament to its enduring significance.

Reopened in 1981 the Yonghe Temple stands as a vibrant center of Buddhist practice. It’s also a beacon attracting visitors from around the globe. It shows the remarkable blend of imperial history and spiritual devotion. Feel the history. Feel the peace. Feel the presence of the Yonghe Temple.
