This isn’t just any rock. It’s the Taiko-ishi also known as the Octopus Stone. It stands proudly near Osaka Castle’s Sakura Gate. This enormous megalith is one of the largest at the castle. Its dimensions are truly impressive 5.5 meters by 11.7 meters. It weighs over 120 tonnes.
The Taiko-ishi’s name comes from its unusual appearance. Look closely at its lower left corner. Do you see it? The granite pattern vaguely resembles an octopus. This intriguing detail adds to the stone’s mystique.
This colossal stone wasn’t just placed here randomly. The Taiko-ishi along with many other massive stones was brought here during Osaka Castle’s reconstruction between 1620 and 1629. The Tokugawa shogunate ordered powerful feudal lords to transport these huge stones. This was a bold show of power. It also cleverly crippled the lords’ finances. Moving these stones required massive resources.
One local lord went to incredible lengths to bring this particular stone. He transported it over 120 kilometers! This act displayed incredible power and competitiveness.
