Here lies a tale of rediscovery. It involves a Qing Dynasty scholar and the search for his final resting place. We are standing before the Zhuang Yougong Tomb, also known as Zhuang Yougong Zhuangyuan Tomb. Zhuang Yougong was no ordinary man.
He was Guangzhou’s only Zhuangyuan of the Qing Dynasty. Zhuangyuan is the title given to the scholar who achieved the highest score in the imperial examination. This was no easy feat. It marked him as one of the most brilliant minds in the empire.
Zhuang Yougong lived from 1713 to 1767. He was a native of Fujian province. Later, he resided in Panyu, now part of Guangzhou. At the young age of 13, he mastered the Five Classics.
In 1739, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, Zhuang Yougong earned the Zhuangyuan title. His early political career flourished. He held positions such as Grand Secretary of the Grand Council and Governor-General. He also served in education and as a minister. Zhuang Yougong died in office in Fujian in 1767. He was 55 years old. He was buried in Panyu.
However, the exact location of Zhuang Yougong’s tomb became a mystery. For years, Zhuang family descendants and experts searched Guangzhou for it. They looked in places with “Zhuangyuan” in their names. They even found some Zhuang family tombs.
In 1999, a tomb was discovered in Huangpu District. It was initially identified as Zhuang Yougong’s tomb. An inscription on a stone tablet read “Tomb of Zhuang Cunxiao”. Zhuang Cunxiao was Zhuang Yougong’s father. Experts later determined that this was indeed the tomb of Zhuang Yougong’s father.
So, where was the real Zhuang Yougong Tomb? The search continued. Experts eventually found another tomb. It was about 50 meters from Zhuang Cunxiao’s tomb. It was hidden in a thicket of weeds.
After examination, experts confirmed that this was the Zhuang Yougong Tomb. The tomb faces southeast to northwest. It features a gray sand structure. It has a head, mountainside, front and rear护坡, platform, and moon pool.
A flower-崗 rock stele stands at the head of the tomb. The inscription reads “Tomb of Zhuang Yougong”. Parts of the tomb’s structure were damaged. There were signs of digging. It is suspected that the tomb had been robbed.
Following the tomb’s identification, the cultural department planned to protect it. Experts suggested combining the protection of both tombs. They also proposed developing the area into a park.
Zhuang Yougong was known for his integrity and dedication. He was committed to serving the people. He believed in diligence, loving the people, and maintaining integrity. As governor of Jiangsu, he focused on water conservancy. His ideas and methods are still relevant today.
The discovery of the Zhuang Yougong Tomb is significant. It is a testament to his legacy. It also highlights the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. Let us remember Zhuang Yougong. He was a brilliant scholar and a dedicated official.
