Fenghuotai, also known as a beacon tower, was vital for military communication. It was the oldest effective telegraph system in Chinese history. Imagine a time long before smartphones or even written messages were common. How did armies signal danger? How did they communicate across vast distances? The answer lies in these very towers.
These towers weren’t just randomly placed. Their location was everything. Guarders watched for any sign of the enemies’ movements. Fenghuotai were often built on mountaintops or rises. This allowed for a commanding view of the surrounding lands. The neighboring towers could see each other clearly.

During the Ming Dynasty, these towers evolved. Hollow Enemy Towers sometimes doubled as beacon towers. These “Beacon-Equipped Hollow Enemy Towers” had a distinctive look. They were whitewashed with lime on their crenelated walls. Even existing solid beacon towers got a whitewash to show their function.
Historical documents confirm this practice. “Imperial Ming Legal Records” state that when Hollow Enemy Towers replaced solid beacon towers, they were whitewashed. The sides of the crenelated wall and the waist wall were covered in lime.
Archaeological analysis supports these records. Researchers analyzed plaster from Beacon-Equipped Hollow Enemy Towers. The plaster contained calcite, quartz, and dolomite. It was a magnesian lime mortar. This mortar matched the interior wall joints.
The construction followed a traditional method called “mud bottom lime.” A mud mixture with straw was the base layer. Then, a white lime plaster was applied as the outermost layer. Hemp fiber and other plant fibers were often mixed in.
