“A rifle clutched in a giant fist.” That’s what looms over the mass grave here at the Guangzhou Insurrectional Martyr Cemetry Park. We are standing before the 烈士像 Statue.

This park commemorates the martyrs who died during the Guangzhou Uprising. The Communist Party of China led this uprising in December 1927. The park opened to the public in May 1958. It stands as a national key protected site for martyr monuments. It is also a base for national patriotism education.

The Guangzhou Insurrectional Martyr Cemetry Park spans 186000 square meters. It divides into two zones. These are the memorial and the garden. Epigraphs by Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping mark memorial buildings.

Considered a grand and solemn place it consists of several features. We can see the Main Entrance Gate and Memorial Avenue. Of course there is the Guangzhou Insurrection Monument. We also see the Tomb of the Martyrs of Guangzhou Commune.

The Guangzhou Uprising was an ill-fated rebellion. It fell apart soon after it started. Overseas advisors ordered it. They refused to listen to reason.

Carvings around the monument depict the revolt’s initial battles. Some soldiers armed with meat cleavers and rocks appear in them. The carvings show the rebels celebrating the Guangzhou Soviet’s formation.

The rebellion kicked off at the urging of foreign agents. They pressured local Communists to proceed without assistance. Zhang Tailei, the leader of the rebels, died in a car. A German Comintern agent, Heinz Neumann, was with him. His Canton Commune disbanded before a massive advance. Six divisions of National Revolutionary Army soldiers were advancing.

Zhang’s statue is striking. His left hand clutches at his breast. He whirls to face an unseen foe. He snatches his gun.

Labour leader Chen Yu is also depicted. He totes a Mauser. He sports a doubled Chinese jacket against the cold.

Ye Ting, a former Kuomintang officer, is also celebrated. He is in a staider position, in his uniform. He was imprisoned by his own people and died in a plane crash.

Zhao Zixuan, a military officer, is depicted demurely. He is holding his binoculars. He made and deployed the rebels’ home-made explosives.

Nie Rongzhen is another military man. He holds binoculars. It emphasizes his command role in the uprising. He led a vanguard regiment on the Long March. He became the head of China’s nuclear weapons program.

Yang Yin was Zhang Tailei’s successor. His statue shows him handcuffed and defiant. He was betrayed, arrested, tortured, and executed.

Yun Daiying looks pleased. He was appointed Secretary-General of the Guangzhou Soviet. He died in prison.

The Martyrs’ Memorial Garden is constantly upgraded. A three-dimensional wall installation links the dead to the living.

This statue is a powerful reminder. It reminds us of sacrifice. It represents the fight for a new China. The echoes of revolution still resonate here today.
