Built during the reign of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty Lingyue Temple stands before you. Its construction began between 627 and 649 AD. Later it was renamed Lingyue Temple. This temple in Beijing boasts a rich history. It has undergone several renovations. These were in 1293 1683 and 1733.

Lingyue Temple is situated on Baigang Mountain. This mountain is also known as White Iron Mountain. The temple’s location is in the western part of Beijing’s Deshengmen area. It’s one of the largest temple complexes in the area. Its layout is classic. It follows the traditional north-south axis.

Central to Lingyue Temple are the Mountain Gate Heavenly King Hall and the Great Hero Treasure Hall. These halls are aligned along the central axis. Two rows of halls flank either side. These consist of eighteen rooms and bell and drum towers. The Heavenly King Hall is a striking structure. Its design is suspended mountain style. Inside you’ll find statues of the Four Heavenly Kings. There are also images of the Buddhist protectors Vejrapani and Maitreya Buddha.

The Great Hero Treasure Hall or the Jiewei Buddha Hall is equally impressive. It’s a single-eave hall. It has a grand scale. Originally it housed a large statue of Maitreya Buddha. This statue was unfortunately destroyed in 1954. Remarkably some original wooden structures remain. These include the beams and decorative elements. These showcase the distinct architectural style of the period. They offer a fascinating glimpse into the craftsmanship of that era.

Lingyue Temple’s significance extends beyond its architecture. In 2013 it was designated a national key cultural relics protection unit. Archaeological finds further underscore its importance. In 2017 fragments of an ancient Tang Dynasty stele were discovered. This stele is believed to have belonged to a famous Buddhist monk. Its discovery is a significant event. It sheds light on the temple’s early history.

Lingyue Temple’s story is one of resilience. It has survived wars and neglect. It continues to stand as a testament to faith and cultural heritage. It’s a place where history and spirituality intertwine. Lingyue Temple awaits further exploration. I hope you have enjoyed its story.
