A gilded statue gleams. It’s Sakyamuni Buddha. He watches over Lingguang Temple. This temple is one of eight great sites. It stands on Cuiwei Mountain’s east slope.

Lingguang Temple has a long and storied past. It began as Longquan Temple. That was between 766 and 779 AD. This was during the Tang Dynasty. The temple changed names several times. It became Jueshan Temple. Finally it became Lingguang Temple. This name means Temple of Divine Light. It remains its name today.

For centuries Lingguang Temple housed a precious relic. This was a tooth relic of the Buddha. It was originally housed in the Zhaoxian Pagoda. This pagoda was sadly destroyed in 1900. The Eight-Nation Alliance caused the damage. Monk Sheng’an found the relic. He preserved it in a stone box. Later a new stupa was built. This impressive stupa is 51 meters tall. It houses the sacred relic to this day. The relic was moved to Guangji Temple in 1955. It returned to Lingguang Temple later.

In 1983 Lingguang Temple became a National Key Buddhist Temple. The Beijing Municipal Government protected it. It is a place of pilgrimage. People come from all over the world to see the Buddha’s tooth relic. Visitors can also admire other features. There’s a Jade Buddha Hall. There is also a Reclining Buddha Hall. And a Hall of the Dragon King. Each hall is filled with intricate details and stunning statues.

The temple has witnessed centuries of devotion and worship. It survived war and revolution. Lingguang Temple stands as a testament to faith and resilience. It’s a symbol of Buddhism’s enduring power in China. This peaceful place is a treasure for all who visit.
