Gazing up at the dramatic cliffs of 灰石峡 (Huīshíxiá), one can almost feel the echoes of ancient geological forces. 灰石峡 (Huīshíxiá), nestled in the mountains near Beijing, boasts a unique geological makeup. Its eastern part is composed of Cambrian limestone dating back a staggering 5 billion years. Most of the area, however, is formed from Jurassic volcanic rock, a testament to a fiery past 1.5 billion years ago. This unique volcanic rock foundation has created a landscape of breathtaking formations. You can see towering cliffs, vertical rock walls, red rock valleys, rock faces, and the famous 丹霞地貌 (dānxiá dìmào) or “rosy clouds” landform, a unique type of reddish sandstone formation. 灰石峡 (Huīshíxiá) covers an area of 5 square kilometers, reaching altitudes of over 1200 meters. A visit to 灰石峡 (Huīshíxiá) offers a variety of experiences depending on the season. Spring brings vibrant blossoms, summer offers cool respite, and autumn provides the opportunity to harvest fruits. Winter transforms the valley into a magical frozen wonderland. The area becomes a haven for photographers and tourists drawn to the spectacular ice formations.
