Marvelous Beijing Railway Station isn’t it? Imagine its opening in 1959. It was the largest train station in China then. A testament to the nation’s burgeoning power. Beijing Railway Station stands proudly. It’s a blend of traditional Chinese and socialist realist architecture. Gilded eaves and soaring clock towers grace its facade.

The station’s history stretches back further though. A predecessor Zhengyangmen East Station existed since 1901. It served the Beijing-Shanhaiguan Railway. This older station closed when Beijing Railway Station opened. The new station was one of ten major projects marking the tenth anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. Millions of workers built it in just seven months. Soviet experts provided technical guidance.

Beijing Railway Station isn’t just a transportation hub. It’s a symbol of progress. The station’s design was a collaborative effort involving top architects. Premier Zhou Enlai himself was deeply involved. He even suggested adding turrets to the main building. The station’s original twelve tracks and six platforms quickly proved inadequate. The station underwent numerous upgrades over the years. These included computerised ticketing. A TV monitoring screen and automatic broadcasting systems were added. The platform was expanded several times to accommodate the increasing passenger volume.

More than just a station Beijing Railway Station holds a special place in the hearts of the Chinese people. Chairman Mao Zedong personally wrote the station’s name on the sign. The station has played a pivotal role in connecting Beijing to the rest of China. It also connects China to the world. International lines to Moscow and Pyongyang depart from here. Think of the millions of journeys that have begun and ended within these walls. Each train a story untold.

Today Beijing Railway Station remains a significant landmark. While surpassed in size by newer stations it remains the only one inside the old walled city. Trains pass by the Dongbianmen corner tower. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living monument. A testament to China’s enduring spirit. It’s a remarkable piece of history. A story written in steel and stone. A place where journeys begin and end. A journey worth experiencing.
