Established in 1867, Luhe High School began as the Tongzhou Boys’ Boarding School. It’s hard to imagine this sprawling campus as a simple boarding school. Luhe High School, connected to the prestigious Beijing Luhe International Academy (BLIA), boasts a rich history. The original school, founded by American missionaries, evolved into North China College, encompassing primary, middle, high school, a college, and even a seminary. The college portion later moved and became Yenching University. The remaining secondary school took on the name Luhe High School. Luhe High School isn’t just a school; it’s a piece of Beijing’s history, a testament to the blend of cultures and the enduring pursuit of knowledge. Imagine the campus in the early 20th century, with the completion of Williams Hall, Sheffield Hall, Warner Hall, and the iconic Gothic architecture. The school offered a unique curriculum. It embraced modern science, unlike many traditional private schools focused on rote learning. This fostered an atmosphere of new ideas. Luhe High School became a cradle of progress. It fostered individuals who played key roles in China’s modern history, including Ma Wenzhao, the first commissioner of the new China. In 1978, the government recognized Luhe High School’s importance. It designated it a key high school in Beijing, providing special support. In 2000, it earned the distinction of being a state-level model high school. Today, Luhe High School remains a vibrant institution. It continues to nurture young minds, embracing its heritage while preparing students for the future. This is a place where history and education intersect, a place where the echoes of the past inspire future generations.
