In 1911, a spark ignited in Wuchang, igniting a revolution that rippled across China. The echoes reached Shenzhen, then a small town along the Kowloon-Canton Railway. The tremors of change shook the Qing dynasty’s hold, and residents, sensing the shift, rose up and overthrew the local administration. Amid this turmoil, the Chinese section of the Kowloon-Canton Railway opened, its last stop: Liwan Toll Station, also called Liwan Checkpoint or simply Liwan Station. The Liwan Toll Station became more than just a point of entry and exit. It became a gateway, connecting Shenzhen to the wider world and breathing life into its burgeoning economy. This pivotal moment in Shenzhen’s history foreshadowed its future trajectory. Fast forward to 1979, and Bao’an County, which encompassed Shenzhen, was dissolved. The city of Shenzhen was born. This marked the beginning of an era of unprecedented growth, fueled by Deng Xiaoping’s economic reforms and the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. The Liwan Toll Station stood as a silent witness to this transformation, a symbol of Shenzhen’s connection to its past and its bold strides towards the future. As migrants flooded into the newly minted SEZ, Liwan Toll Station became a crucial entry point. It pulsed with the energy of dreams and aspirations, a microcosm of Shenzhen’s dynamic spirit. Today, while the physical Liwan Toll Station may no longer exist in its original form, its legacy persists. It remains a symbolic landmark in Shenzhen’s narrative, a reminder of the railway that sowed the seeds of its economic miracle and the pivotal role it played in the city’s meteoric rise.
