“Two windows, but two different views of life,” the monk chuckled, gesturing toward the Genko-an temple behind him. We found ourselves drawn into the peaceful ambiance of Genko-an, a small Zen Buddhist temple nestled in northwest Kyoto. Established in 1346, Genko-an offers a captivating glimpse into Japanese history and spirituality, especially through its iconic windows: the “Window of Enlightenment” and the “Window of Delusion”. The round Window of Enlightenment, or “Satori no mado”, with its uninterrupted form, symbolizes the wholeness of the Zen state and the universe itself. The square Window of Delusion, “Mayoi no mado”, represents the suffering inherent to human life – birth, aging, illness, and death – depicted by its four corners. Genko-an holds a somber secret: its “bloody ceilings”. These ceilings, crafted from the blood-soaked floorboards of Fushimi Castle, serve as a chilling reminder of the samurai who committed seppuku there in 1600. The faint traces of handprints and footprints on the dark wood tell a silent tale of sacrifice and loyalty. The tranquility of the temple gardens, a blend of vibrant green moss and carefully raked gravel, offers a sense of serenity that contrasts sharply with the weighty history of the ceilings above. Genko-an stands as a quiet testament to the enduring power of history and spirituality, inviting contemplation and offering a unique perspective on life, death, and enlightenment.
