Indeed, the Pingtan Strait Bridge, completed in 2020, is a marvel of engineering. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and ambition. This bridge is not just a pathway; it’s a lifeline. It links Pingtan Island, the fifth largest island in China, to the mainland. This 16.34-kilometer bridge isn’t just long; it holds the title of China’s first and the world’s longest combined highway-railway cross-sea bridge. Imagine, six lanes of highway bustling with traffic above, and below, a two-lane railway where trains whiz by at 200 kilometers per hour. The Pingtan Strait Bridge is more than just steel and concrete. It represents a victory over nature. This area was once considered a no-go zone for bridge building. The strait is notorious for its fierce winds, high waves, and powerful currents. It’s nestled in a region considered one of the world’s windiest, rivaling even the Cape of Good Hope and Bermuda. Yet, against these odds, the bridge stands tall. Construction began in 2013, braving not only the challenging environment but also over 29 typhoons during its construction. One, Super Typhoon Soudelor, even reached a terrifying Category 14 as it made landfall on the bridge in 2015. Think of the strength required to withstand such a force. The Pingtan Strait Bridge is a symbol of resilience. It showcases the builders’ determination to connect and overcome. The bridge is part of the larger 88.43-kilometer Fuzhou-Pingtan railway. This railway is a network of marvels, incorporating 71 bridges and 16 tunnels. It connects six stations, including Fuzhou, Pingtan, and several others, opening up a critical passage in the “Golden Triangle” area of southern Fujian.
