Ever wonder about the final resting place of an emperor? Here at 淳和天皇陵, we stand before the mausoleum of Emperor Junna. He was the 53rd emperor of Japan.

Emperor Junna lived from approximately 786 to 840. He ruled from 823 to 833. The Imperial Household Agency reveres this site. It is officially called Ōharano no Nishi no Minenoe no Misasagi. That translates to Ōharano no Nishi no Minenoe Imperial Mausoleum. It is located in Nishikyo-ku Kyoto.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine Kyoto in the Heian period. Otomo, who would become Emperor Junna, was born around 786. He was a son of Emperor Kanmu.

In 810, a pivotal event occurred. After the Heizei Emperor’s rebellion, Otomo became the crown prince. He was 25 years old. This set the stage for his future reign.

In 823, Emperor Saga abdicated. Junna, Saga’s younger brother, then received the succession. He ascended to the throne on May 30, 823.

Junna’s reign saw capable officials at court. Fujiwara no Fuyutsugu and Fujiwara no Otsugu served as Sadaijin. Kiyohara no Natsuno was Udaijin. These men were the most powerful figures. They helped Emperor Junna govern.

Emperor Junna had many consorts and children. Imperial Princess Shoshi was his empress. She was Emperor Saga’s daughter. They had several children including Prince Tsunesada.

After ten years as emperor, Junna abdicated in 833. His adopted son Ninmyo took the throne. Junna became the Junior Retired Emperor. Saga was the Senior Retired Emperor.

Emperor Junna died in 840 at the age of 55. His death led to political maneuvering. Fujiwara no Yoshifusa ensured Montoku became emperor. This event increased the Fujiwara clan’s power.

The years of Junna’s reign are marked by specific era names. These include Konin and Tencho. These eras reflect the character of his time.

淳和天皇陵 is a reminder of Emperor Junna’s life. He played a crucial role in Japan’s history. His legacy continues to be honored here in Kyoto.
