“Imagine being rebels trying to escape!” That’s what it must have felt like long ago. We’re standing before Tenjin Bridge. It is a vital piece of Osaka’s history. This bridge is more than just steel and concrete. It is a symbol of resilience. It is a testament to Osaka’s enduring spirit.

Tenjin Bridge spans the Okawa River. This river was formerly known as the Yodogawa River. The bridge passes over Nakanoshima’s Kensaku. It is believed to have been built around 1594. Originally, it was simply called Shinbashi. The name Tenjin Bridge came later. It was named after the nearby Tenjin Shrine in Tenma. The shrine managed the bridge.

In 1634, Tenjin Bridge became a Kogi Bridge. It shared this designation with eleven other bridges. Locals affectionately knew it as one of the “Three Great Bridges of Naniwa”. The others are Tenmabashi Bridge and Namba Bridge. A children’s song even celebrated it. “Tenjin Bridge is so long” the song went. “It would be scary if it fell.”

Tenjin Bridge played a crucial role in early modern times. During the Oshio Heihachiro Rebellion, the shogunate acted swiftly. They destroyed three major bridges. Tenjin Bridge was one of them. This was to prevent the rebels from advancing.

Disaster struck in 1929. A major flood washed away Tenjin Bridge. In 1932, it was rebuilt as a steel bridge. At the time, it was the longest road bridge in Japan. The current bridge dates back to 1934. It was rebuilt to accommodate the widening of Matsuyamachisuji.

Today, Tenjin Bridge stretches 210.7 meters. It features three light steel arches. Concrete arches support both ends. It connects 1-chome Tenjinbashi in Kita-ku with Kitahama Higashi in Chuo-ku.

Tenjin Bridge is more than just a crossing. It is a landmark that has seen centuries of Osaka’s history. It has withstood floods and rebellions. It has evolved from a simple wooden structure to a modern steel bridge. As you cross it, remember its story. Remember the people who crossed it before us. Remember the children’s song that echoes through time. Tenjin Bridge stands as a proud symbol of Osaka’s past and present.
