Twelve yuan. That’s all it costs. The Haizhu Canteen. A simple name for a place with a complex story. This isn’t just any canteen. It’s a community canteen built within a residential area. It serves the elderly and those with disabilities. Many of its patrons are residents of the Nan Shitou residential area. This area has seventeen communities with over two million residents. About four hundred people eat here daily. There are elderly residents. There are also community workers and security personnel.

The Haizhu Canteen is more than just a place to eat. It’s a vital part of the social fabric of Nan Shitou. It’s a community hub a place of connection. The canteen is located at 18 Shigang Road in South Haizhu District. It was built in March this year using a self-built apartment building as its core. It’s also called the “For the People Canteen.” That name reflects its mission. It’s designed to provide affordable meals for all.

When I visited one day at 11:30 am I saw many elderly people enjoying their meals. The menu is affordable and varied. Two dishes one soup costs twelve yuan. The elderly get a discount with their senior cards. The city government subsidizes the cost. Three dishes and one soup cost sixteen yuan. They also offer various healthy options. This includes five-spice braised pork with rice. They also have stewed yam with ribs. There are evening specials such as stir-fry dishes. The food is fresh and delicious. Each dish is carefully prepared. The portions are generous. Nothing is skimped.

The canteen manager Mr. Zeng Ka explained the philosophy behind the canteen. He wants to make healthy and affordable meals accessible. This is important for the community’s well-being. He said that creating a community canteen was a way to build social connections. The price is especially friendly to the construction workers. He emphasized the “For the People” aspect. The canteen and the community support each other.

Mr. Zeng also mentioned challenges. The canteen is constantly trying to find ways to improve. Menu innovation is important. They’re exploring new dishes and increasing variety. He wants to attract a broader range of customers. He hopes to further expand its offerings. The canteen is more than just a restaurant. It’s a symbol of community cooperation. It shows the government’s dedication to public welfare. It demonstrates a path for sustainable development. The Haizhu Canteen proves that even small initiatives can have a large impact. It fosters a stronger sense of community.
