Deeply rooted in local culture the Ukishima Thirteen-story Stone Pagoda fascinates visitors. This majestic pagoda blends in with the scenery along the Uji River. Welcome to a site of profound historical and cultural significance. Here stands the Ukishima Thirteen-story Stone Pagoda.

This impressive stone structure is located on 塔の島. This island sits on the Uji River sandbank in Uji City Kyoto Prefecture. Monk Eison a high priest of Saidaiji Temple in Nara erected it.

The Ukishima Thirteen-story Stone Pagoda was built in 1286 during the Kamakura period. At nearly 15 meters tall this pagoda is one of Japan’s largest. It served as a memorial to fish spirits. It also prayed for the safety of the Uji Bridge.

At that time Ajiro fishing was popular in the Uji River. Eison concerned about the excessive loss of fish life appealed to the Imperial Court. He wanted them to ban this fishing method. Unnecessary fishing gear was buried at the base of the Ukishima Thirteen-story Stone Pagoda. This act served as a memorial service for the fish spirits.

After repeated floods and collapses the Ukishima Thirteen-story Stone Pagoda was rebuilt. This happened during the Meiji era. Some stones were lost during this time and have since been replaced.

There is a legend about these lost stones. Goemon Ishikawa a thief allegedly stole the 9th or 5th stone from the top. He then donated it to Fujimori Shrine. Today this stone is said to be the base for the shrine’s chozuya.

Though there are discrepancies between Goemon’s active period and the pagoda’s construction this legend persists. It highlights the Ukishima Thirteen-story Stone Pagoda’s deep connection to the area’s history.

Nearby you’ll find Byodo-in Temple and Ujigami Shrine. These are other popular tourist destinations. The Ukishima Thirteen-story Stone Pagoda is easily accessible from Keihan Uji Station and JR Uji Station. It offers a chance to explore history. It allows you to appreciate cultural heritage.

As you stand here take in the Ukishima Thirteen-story Stone Pagoda’s presence. Consider its history its purpose and its place in the community. It serves as a testament to faith remembrance and the enduring power of cultural symbols.
