Perched on the slopes of Mount Kokura, Jojakkoji Temple offers a tranquil escape. Jojakkoji Temple may seem small, but its history and views are anything but. Founded in 1489 by Shinnyo, Jojakkoji began as a small temple. Its name, however, wouldn’t become Jojakkoji until much later. In 1496, during the construction of Shinko-an in the nearby village of Ikeda, a portrait of Amida Nyorai was commissioned from the monk Eijo. This portrait would eventually find its way to Jojakkoji. The temple moved to its current location in 1532. Then in 1615, a wooden statue of Amida Nyorai was enshrined as the principal object of worship. It was then that the temple’s name officially changed to Jojakkoji. Jojakkoji Temple isn’t just a place of historical significance. It also plays a role in the local community. The temple grounds are adjacent to the Komei Kindergarten. This kindergarten, established in the main hall of Jojakkoji Temple in 1949, provides an example of the blending of the sacred and the everyday. The kindergarten was later officially recognized by the Ministry of Education in 1957. The school became part of the Educational Foundation Komei Gakuen in 1967. While visiting Jojakkoji, take a moment to appreciate the stunning views it offers. The main hall and the Tahoto pagoda are positioned to take advantage of the scenery. These structures provide a breathtaking panorama of Kyoto. Jojakkoji Temple’s pagoda is a unique blend of old and new. Built in the 17th century, it showcases the beautiful Momoyama architectural style, reminiscent of structures from a century earlier. This seemingly small temple, rich in history and beauty, is a testament to the enduring spirit of Jojakkoji.
