Gazing up at the weathered stone, can you imagine the stories etched within the 浄土宗西山派 蓮華寺 Stele? This memorial stele stands as a silent witness to centuries of history. It connects us to the very ground we stand on.

Let’s delve into the story of this temple. The 浄土宗西山派 蓮華寺 Stele is more than just stone. It is a testament to faith. It embodies the enduring spirit of Kyoto. 蓮華寺 is a Tendai sect temple. Its origin is not entirely clear.

Once, there was a Jisyu School Buddhist temple. It stood near Kyoto Station. The Onin War devastated it. In 1662, Imaeda Minbu Chikayoshi brought it to Takano. He prayed for his grandfather’s soul. Famous figures helped him. These were Ishikawa Jozan and Ingen Zenshi.

The word “Renge” means lotus. The temple was named after “Rengezo.” Rengezo is a Buddhist paradise. It sits on a huge lotus.

The garden has a small pond. Maple trees surround it. The pond uses the Takano River for irrigation. It is a Gakubuchi Teien. This technique frames the garden with pillars. You can walk from the garden to the main hall.

Hourai San is a mountain in China. Taoism sees it as a symbol of eternal life. Stones represent it in the garden. There is a turtle with ears on Hourai San. It has a stela on its back. It mixes Kirin and turtle. Kirin rules the sky. The turtle rules the ground. Together, they mean the universe. Kame Shima island and Tsuru Ishi stone also exist. Kame and Tsuru mean good fortune. The garden represents Jodo. It is a paradise in Buddhism. Funaishi is a stone boat. It heads for Jodo. The garden places us in Jodo.

Maple trees hide the paradise. Taking photos of something sacred is vulgar.

Inside the main hall is an old lacquered box. It has shell inlays. The inlays show pine trees and birds. A statue of Gautama Buddha is inside. The box is too old to open. Plates on the pillars say 本源宗正派 and 覚苑永長春. They pray for Buddhist teachings.

There is also a statue of Amidaba. Two monks saved it from Oda Nobunaga in 1571. They hid it in a village. Later, they asked a monk to enshrine it. A statue of Akala also exists. It is a guardian of Buddhism.

Keyaki trees make the pillars. They stand on drum-shaped stones. Cicadas decorate the doors. They guard the darkness.

Unique stone lanterns exist here. They are thin and in the Rengeji style. About 300 Buddha statues are near the entrance. They were found during tramway construction.

The 浄土宗西山派 蓮華寺 Stele stands. It connects us to history. It embodies the spirit of Kyoto. It is a destination for reflection and appreciation.
