Amidst the bustling streets of modern Kyoto, a silent storyteller stands. The Jōdo-shū Seishin’in Stele, a granite memorial, whispers tales of a bygone era. Let us unravel the story of this unassuming yet significant landmark. The Jōdo-shū Seishin’in Stele marks a temple deeply connected to the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land) sect of Buddhism, one of Japan’s most widely practiced Buddhist traditions.

Originally, Seishin’in Temple, the site of the stele, was situated near the Imperial Palace. The temple’s early resident priest, Wazen Hōshi, a female performer during the Heian period (794-1185), is considered its founder. Seishin’in is also known as Wazen Hōshi Temple. The temple grounds hold not only the image of Amitābha Buddha, the central figure of Pure Land Buddhism, but also a statue of Wazen Hōshi. A plum tree also graces the temple, planted in honor of Wazen Hōshi’s beloved plum tree, the “Nokiba no Ume” (Plum of the Eaves).

During the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1573-1603), under orders from Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the temple relocated to its present location. Years later, in 1872, with the construction of Shinkyōgoku-dōri (Shinkyōgoku Street), the temple grounds were divided. This division resulted in the loss of part of the temple complex.

Seishin’in’s story intertwines with the broader narrative of the Jōdo-shū sect. Founded by Hōnen Shōnin (1133-1212), Jōdo-shū emphasizes devotion to Amitābha Buddha and the practice of nembutsu (reciting Amitābha’s name). Honen believed that reciting “Namu Amida Butsu” (Homage to Amida Buddha) ensured rebirth in Sukhavati, the Pure Land. Wazen Hōshi’s connection to Seishin’in underscores the inclusivity of Hōnen’s teachings, which embraced people from all walks of life.

The Jōdo-shū Seishin’in Stele, therefore, represents more than just a single temple. It embodies the enduring spirit of Pure Land Buddhism and its accessibility to all. The stele connects us to the cultural richness of Kyoto and the legacy of Wazen Hōshi. This quiet monument, amidst the vibrant energy of the city, offers a glimpse into a world of faith, art, and history. As you continue your exploration of Kyoto, remember the story of the Jōdo-shū Seishin’in Stele, a testament to the power of devotion and the enduring influence of Japanese Buddhism.
