This old bridge site whispers tales of emperors and flower-filled streams. We are standing at the \u6d41\u82b1\u53e4\u6865\u65e7\u5740. It is located in Yuexiu District. This area was once the famous Orchid Lake. It was also known as Lan Lake.
Legend says a Southern Han ruler built a beautiful garden here. It was called Fragrant Spring Garden. He diverted water from the Ganxi Stream. This connected to the lake. The garden was full of buildings and rare plants.
A wooden bridge crossed the water. Boats could pass beneath it. Palace ladies would discard faded flowers into the stream. The blossoms floated under the bridge. This gave the \u6d41\u82b1\u53e4\u6865\u65e7\u5740 its name. It means “flowing flower bridge.”
During the Ming Dynasty the \u6d41\u82b1\u53e4\u6865\u65e7\u5740 was rebuilt as a stone bridge. The Qing Dynasty saw further restoration. The bridge’s original beauty is mostly gone.
Now we see a flower-崗 stone bridge face. It dates back to the Qing Dynasty. It is about 5.48 meters long and 4.55 meters wide. An inscription reads \u6d41\u82b1\u53e4\u6865. These four characters mean “Ancient Flowing Flower Bridge”.
The \u6d41\u82b1\u53e4\u6865\u65e7\u5740 is a protected relic in Yuexiu District. Guangzhou was once a hilly, watery landscape. It was at the Pearl River Delta. The city started growing in the Qin Dynasty. People settled around slightly higher ground. This ground included Fan and Yu mountains.
Over 2200 years the land expanded. The waters receded. By the late Qing Dynasty Guangzhou’s shape was nearly what it is today. North of the Pearl River the old city still had many waterways. South of the river had even more.
Bridges like \u6d41\u82b1\u53e4\u6865\u65e7\u5740 were built for easy travel. Other notable bridges included Yun Gui Bridge and Hui Jin Bridge. These bridges witnessed the city’s history.
